What is human fatigue?

If we talk about human fatiguewe're talking about performance, exhaustion and motivation. Fatigue in a human being is related to decreased physical and mental function of a human being that translates into hypersensitivity, mood swings, Drowsiness and more.

The labor demandthe few hours of sleep or long hours have a detrimental effect on the employee performance. In the event that an employee is exposed to work under a state of fatigue can lead to situations of danger and accidents that could put both the workers and the company at risk. 

Today, the challenge is installed in sectors such as mining, transport of passengers or heavy cargoThe areas most exposed to this type of situation.

Currently, there are prevention devices that help reduce the number of accidentssuch as the sleep sensors, third eye, speed meters, among others.

Through these security devicesIn addition to the above, greater control over employee behaviour and performance can be achieved.

The Chilean Security Association, ACHS, delivered important information for recognizing fatigue and how to prevent it.

How to identify fatigue?

Physiological area:
- Loss of energy

Cognitive area:
- Increased reaction time
- Memory deficit
- Difficulty in planning and sequencing tasks
- Surveillance deduction
- Monitoring of tasks and activities
- Difficulty in performing simple tasks with precision

Behavioral area:
- Mood disorders (irritability, fears, anxiety, loss of sense of humor)
- Deterioration of the ability to work as a team.
- Tendency towards negativity and even depression.
- Changes in the relationship with your co-workers.

ACHS recommends:

Active pauses:
- Take these breaks every 3 hours during the working day, lasting between 5 and 7 minutes each.

Healthy eating:
- Keep
fixed hours for main meals
- Avoid pre-cooked and canned foods because of their high salt content
- Avoid artificial drinks and juices because of their high sugar content
- Consume between 1 and 2 litres of water daily

Physical exercise:
- Perform
20 to 30 minutes daily of sports activity preferably in the morning.
- Avoid using the elevator and car for short distances.

Sleep Hygiene:
- No smoking
- Do not consume beverages containing caffeine
- Make sure your room is clean and ventilated
- Remember to get an average of 8 hours of sleep per day.

If you identify signs of fatigue, notify the company coordinator or prevention expert.
